Daifoo Turns Thirteen (2004-11-09)

I remember the day we brought Daifoo home from a pet shop in Sydney.  The kitten we really wanted was sold, therefore we picked Daifoo as our Plan B pet.  I remember how he meowed constantly in the car in his box which I was holding while KL drove home.  I remember how he sniffed every corner of the apartment once we got him inside.  I distinctly remember how I caught him sniffing the wall board suspiciously one night and when I picked his tiny body up to take him to the litter box, he peed all the way there and left a trail of pee on the floor.   All of this happened thirteen years ago?

I remember the day when we were babysitting my brother's Labrador in our house and the dog had our other cat backed up in a corner and she was cowering there in shudders.  When Daifoo saw this, he immediately leapt on the back of the dog.  The Labrador let out a startled cry, turned around and Daifoo scratched his opponent one more time in the body while my other cat escaped in the scuffle.   When the Labrador saw that his prey was gone, he lost interest in Daifoo as well and they went their separate ways.  I couldn't move a muscle to help as I stood fascinated watching one cat bullied by a dog and then rescued by her friend who was one fifth the size of his foe.  Daifoo was a young cat then but I know even at thirteen, he could still fight dogs to save his own people.

Daifoo turns thirteen some time in November.  Besides the two years he was at my sister's in Sydney when we first moved to Tokyo, he spent eleven years of his life learning our likes and dislikes and adapting to our lifestyle, but mostly just being himself.  We are thankful Daifoo becomes part of our family and we love nothing more than to share many more of his birthdays with us.

I don't need you to live forever, I just need you to live my life time.  Can you do that much, Daifoo?  Just that teeny much, alright?

Happy Birthday.
