Japanese TV Drama (2004-10-10)

We watch TV drama every week for no other reasons other than to learn Japanese.  If I were a Japanese, there's no way I can watch ten minutes of it without gagging.  In fact, if I were a Japanese, I could easily find better things to do than watching the silly drama.

The plot in a Japanese drama is trite and ALWAYS predictable.  Almost every one we have watched has the main actor
(A) hit by a car or motorcycle
(B) tumbled down an escalator
(C) struck by an object falling from above or
(D) involved in any accidents causing head injury
on his way to meet his beloved main actress, either to a tryst or worse, to their wedding, thus leaving the poor woman waiting longingly but anxiously wondering what took her lover so long.  And usually after the tragic accident, the man will inevitably become amnesiac!  What follows will be the agony the woman endures facing someone she so dearly loves whose memory of her is wiped out.  But audience always knows that eventually the actor will remember everything in the past and the two will live happily ever after.

Another classic cliche writers LOVE to incorporate in the script is for two people to fall in love only to find out they are half brother and sister!  But then as the totally heart-broken man leaves the woman he thought was his sister to a faraway place to live as a recluse, the woman's father will miraculously reveal the long-held secret that he is actually not her real father so the two love birds can actually be together!

What I also can't stand is that there is always the one (or more) actress in every single drama who talks and acts like she is the cutest and most adorable woman on earth.  It is not part of the acting required to depict the role she plays in the drama.  She can be an affair-seeking secretary, a caring office lady or a bubbly teacher but this person will blink, nod or cover her mouth while giggling in a way that naturally oozes a syrupy self-admiring face, over-soft voice and pitiful body gestures that annoy the hell out of us.

TV drama on every channel has just finished this season.  They are currently on a break before brand new drama restarts shortly. KL and I will choose a couple to watch and this time I will also have a vomit bowl next to me.
