Bonsai (2005-02-02)
I used to think bonsai was cruel. It's like locking a kid in a small cage all his life so he would not grow more than the cage allows. Sick circus people many years ago used to do this to children to give them deformed body shapes as a money-making exhibition freak show. I used to think that forcing a tree to grow into a pot plant size was unnatural and weird, but now I am okay with the concept although I still prefer trees in their full size.
Bonsai in Japanese literally means pot plants. Pine trees are common
species to grow into bonsai, but the few plum trees and the miniature
maple tree bonsai I saw recently were quite unusual. I love
gardening and generally like browsing nurseries, but seeing those teeny
little trees make me feel sorry for those plants.
