Sweet Dynasty (2005-09-30)
When we were in Hong Kong in 2003, we went to a restaurant called Sweet Dynasty in tourist district Tsimshatsui. Although the restaurant is well-known for its Chinese desserts, their other dishes are very tasty too. (www.sweetdynasty.com.hk)We liked their food very much but I doubt we'll visit it
again. With it being in a prime tourist area and chock full of
Japanese customers, the prices are high. We try to stay away from
eateries frequented by Japanese tourists because such places are almost
always expensive compared to the local resaurants which offer the same
kind of yummy food.
Sweet Dynasty has begun its chain of branches in Japan a couple of
years ago. KL and I went to the one in Aoyama () for the first time
recently. Its menu is a lot smaller than the one in Hong Kong,
but some must-have items such as wonton noodles, tofu dessert and
congee are there.
That day, we ordered the famous wonton noodles, some dimsum and a
bowl of warm tofu dessert in almond syrup for KL. The noodles
were exactly the kind you'd get in HK: the texture was slightly bouncy
and chewy at the same time. The half a dozen wontons in the
noodles were quite delicious albeit their small size. Chasuibao
(Steamed roast pork buns) was a big disappointment. The filling
tasted nothing like HK's chasuibao and the bun itself was flat and
lacked the fluffiness.
I wouldn't mind going back again and have the wonton noodles if not for anything else. I would pretend I didn't see the high prices on their menu because what do you expect? It is chock full of Japanese customers.
